"Ladies and gentlemen, if you are craving the latest in indie/alternative punk-rock music from around the world, then listen every Saturday night 9-11 to home of NU rock NU 107 for Pirate Satellite…"
That is the famous tagline of this Saturday show uttered by an Aussie DJ (whose name is witheld and intends to keep it that way). The show is called Pirate Satellite (which comes from one of The Clash’s single) and is making waves since the first day it was aired. As an avid listener of the program, it is one of the alternative household remedies when late night weekend gigs are not organized or planned. Well, to start with, it is totally boombastic! In an interview published in the January 2007 issue of Manual Magazine, Par Sallan, the creator of the show (who himself was a DJ), highlighted different reasons why Filipinos should listen to it. If you have are tired of the POP bands (I mean, these bands that are so mainstreamed that their songs are repeated over and over, even in MTV or its local counterpart), then this show might just be what you are looking for. Okay, I know you’ve been desperately wanting to know exactly where I am pointing at (and the word desperate comes in, haha! As if!). Be ready to be blown away with interesting indie tunes (mostly are Brit) and tons of trivia! So here goes the list of albums and the artists who could best represent what Pirate Satellite is all about…
1. London Calling-The Clash
2. Oceans Apart- The Go-Betweens
3. The Queen Is Dead- The Smiths
4. Funeral-The Arcade of Fire
5. Stars of CCTV- Hard Fi
6. Black Noise Is The New Sound-Tokyo Sex Destruction
7. S/T-The Specials
